HS Hockey defeats Hume Fogg 1-0 on goal by Sterling Schwartz

The Panthers came out early on and played a much more physical game from start to finish. Taylor Maitland took a penalty in the 2nd minute of the game, but it served notice that FRA/USN would not make it easy for their opponents. There were very few good scoring chances for either team in the first period as the shots were 5-3 in favor of Hume Fogg/Page, but the game was scoreless after one.

In the second period, the Panthers started to absorb the lessons of the coaches and worked pucks low consistently and generated several scoring chances. At the 4:39 mark of the period, junior Sterling Schwartz scored his second of the year from in close with assists to junior co-captain Alex Melin and junior Taylor Maitland. Meanwhile, senior co-captain Jon Rydburg turned aside 7 shots in that period and it was his goaltending and some good play from the Panther penalty killers that kept them up 1-0 after two.

In the 3rd period, Hume Fogg/Page came out strong and threw everything at the Panther netminder Rydburg, but he was up to the challenge stopping all 12 shots he faced in the period to preserve the shut out and the 1-0 victory.

It was a good character test for the Panthers as they won despite being without top scorer freshman Logan Orem. The team leaders needed to step up and set the tone for the night- mission accomplished according to Coach Rich Melin. "We needed Alex (Melin), Jon (Rydburg) and Sterling (Schwartz) to play their best and they did what they are capable of. We count on them, but we also saw others make important contributions and that was pivotal. Junior Andrew Looney, played a very strong game, blocking shots, getting pucks deep and making it hard on Hume Fogg, our defense played better as senior Ben Brinton played a solid physical game while freshman Jake Jones, and 8th grader Jackson Thomas had their best games of the season. Best of all, role players Dillon Korpman and Jake Conley made the most of their minutes and contributed."

"Wins are important for a young team learning a way of playing hockey that's different from the past" the coach finished, "we don't have the skill we used to however we have guys who are capable of learning how to manufacture offense by getting pucks deep in the attack zone, winning battles/forcing turnovers and going to the front of the net to score. Best of all, we stood up to the pressure and maintained our composure late when it counted and this is a very important lesson for a young team.”

With the win, the Panther's moved up to 5th in the standings. Their next opponent will be next Wednesday night December 5th against Ensworth/Goodpasture at 8:55pm at A-Game.
