USN splits with Franklin High School

Will Jones makes State; Kellon Patey, Natalie TeSelle, Elena Escalas earn Top-10 swims
The USN swimming team returned to Brentwood to take on the Franklin High School Rebels on Tuesday.  Franklin won the divisional championship in 2011-2012 and is one of the strongest teams in the Region, and we had high hopes for an exciting meet.

The boys seized what looked on paper to be a close meet, winning all 11 races en route to a 112-58 win.  Six different boys won individual events for the Tigers: Mark Rusznak (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke), Nicholas Ng (100 butterfly, 200 IM), Ben Tattersfield (50 free), Anders Hahnemann (100 free), Kellon Patey (500 freestyle), and Will Jones (100 breaststroke).  These boys also won three relays and enjoyed additional contributions from William Doak on both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Notably, Kellon Patey’s 200 IM earned him a spot on the USN all-time Top 10 list (8th), and Kellon, Ben Tattersfield, Nicholas Ng, and Anders Hahnemann’s 200 freestyle relay swim earned a spot on the list as well (5th).

Other standout swims came from Will Jones, who punched his ticket to the 2013 State meet in winning the 100 breaststroke, John Spence, who posted huge breakthroughs in both his 50 and 100 freestyles, and Daniel Pannock, who finished second in both the 100 freestyle and backstroke with best times in both events.

The USN girls were unable to match Franklin’s depth and lost 122-48, giving Franklin the combined team win, 180-160.  Elena Escalas won the 100 breaststroke and earned swims on the USN all-time Top 10 list in both the 200 IM (6th) and 100 freestyle (7th).  Natalie TeSelle won the 100 butterfly and earned her first spot on the USN all-time Top 10 list in the 500 freestyle (10th).

Our biggest improvement of the day came from Alexandria Yu, who dropped 8 seconds in her 200 freestyle.  Other lifetime best swims came from Caroline Hollahan (200 freestyle), Julianna Lewis (200 freestyle), Anya Li (100 breaststroke), Effie Zuberer-Davis (100 breaststroke), and Natascha Heckers (50 freestyle).

Our swimmers of the meet were John Spence and Effie Zuberer-Davis.  Spence dropped another 2.5 seconds off his 50 free, and Effie improved her 100 breaststroke by almost 5 seconds after swimming her lifetime best in the 500 free.

The Tigers return to competition next Tuesday against divisional rivals Father Ryan and Pope John Paul II.
