Boys fall for first time since 2008-2009; Sweet, Escalas earn new Top 10 times
The USN Swimming Team traveled to Murfreesboro to take on a strong Riverdale High School Warriors team on Thursday night for the first dual meet of the season. Despite winning 7 of 11 events and some strong efforts across the board, the boys’ team fell 87-83, the USN boys’ first loss since the 2008-2009 season. Our young (over 50% freshmen) girls’ squad won 3 of 11 events but lost 116-54, giving Riverdale a 203-137 win in the combined team.
The boys seven event wins came mostly from the Class of 2014: NicholasNg (200 IM, 100 butterfly) and MarkRusznak (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke) won two each, and Will Jones added another (100 breaststroke). The three combined with classmate Ben Tattersfield to win the 200 medley relay, and Rusznak and Ng were joined by senior Anders Hahnemann and sophomore Kellon Patey in winning the 400 freestyle relay.
In spite of the loss, we were pleased to open the season with some good early season swims. Kevin Chen earned two lifetime bests in the 200 and 500 freestyles, and TebynChittester and WillAllen each posted major breakthroughs in their 100 freestyles, dropping six seconds each. Kellon Patey and Miro Hurdle added some promising early season swims that bode well for the 2013 State meet.
On the girls’ side, Elena Escalas was a double individual winner, capturing both the 200 IM and 500 freestyles. Elena’s 500 freestyle moved her up to 4th on the USN all-time Top 10 list, and her 200 IM moved her up to 8th. Senior Logan Sweet added her first-ever individual win in the 100 backstroke, dropping 3 seconds and earning her first spot on the USN Top 10 list (9th).
We were also particularly impressed by our freshmen girls’ ability to compete fearlessly in the most challenging races. The freshmen were led by Natalie TeSelle, who had two strong swims in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyles, just missing the USN Top 10 list in the 500. Senior Sophie Campbell also posted two lifetime bests.
Our swimmers of the meet were Logan Sweet and Will Allen, who each put together four lifetime best swims on the day.
The team returns to competition on Wednesday, November 14 against Brentwood Academy.
