The USN cross country teams continued their "run" of success at Saturday's Chickasaw Trails Invitational in Oakville, AL. The girls finished fourth in a thirty-one team field, and the boys won their thirty-nine team race for the second year in a row!

With torrential rains passing the area by, but leaving cooler temperatures behind, the teams were ready to run swiftly on the beautiful course. The girls started things off, with the top three of Bennet LeMaster, Lydia Warren, and Hannah Roth moving quickly toward the front of the field (where they would stay throughout the 5k race). Hannah Bollen and Maggie Young were a little further back, followed by Larkin Johnson, Josephine Zenker, Meredith Hill, and Kate Carpenter. As the typical race attrition kicked in, the team's runners, having wisely started off a bit conservatively, moved up in the standings. This lowered the team score (based on the sum of individual placings), and left the Tigers in 4th.

The boys took heed of the need to start smart and finish strong. No runners exemplified that better, on any team, as all five scorers moved well up the field as the race progressed. William Doak and Ben Keffer, around 20th at the first mile, moved way up, taking 3rd and 5th, respectively (out of over 300 runners), and the trio of Christian Floyd, Dylan Groos, and Sam Bollen moved from the 50s at the 1.5-mile mark into the low 20s by race's end. This gave the Tigers a score of 71, over 100 points better than the second place team. Mitch Lutz and Simpson Tanner also ran well, ducking well under 20 minutes, and first-time varsity runners Chandler Floyd, Reid Dickerson, and Brad Johnson ran very well.

Many of the "B" team runners also had fantastic race performances, with many a lifetime personal record (PR). Kudos to Molly Sullivan on her first-ever 5k, and to the many runners who represented USN so well!

The team will next take to the wilds of Vaughns Creek on September 18.
