Coogan earns two new State cuts; Rusznak, Ng, Escalas, McPherson all win two events each
The USN swimming team took on Hume-Fogg Academy in a non-divisional dual meet last night.  After 22 events and many close races, both the boys’ team (117-53) and girls’ team (97-68) earned solid wins, giving the combined team a 214-121 victory.  The final score of the meet did not reflect how close this meet was; many races were decided by tenths of a second, and the USN coaching staff was impressed at the Tigers' ability to finish strong and win close races.

The girls’ team took first place in 10 of 11 events, led by freshmen double event-winners Elena Escalas (200 IM, 100 butterfly) and Meghan McPherson (200 freestyle, 100 backstroke).  Elena’s 200 IM and Meghan’s 100 backstroke earned spots on the USN All-time Top 10 list.  Seniors Caroline Graham (100 freestyle) and Ellen Jones (100 breaststroke) added individual wins, and junior Logan Sweet (50 freestyle) added a win as well.

Other strong efforts came from Sophie Campbell, who contributed to a relay win and had two lifetime bests; Anya Li, who had two lifetime bests; and Julianna Lewis, who swam a well-paced 500 freestyle to earn second place.

The boys’ team also captured 10 of 11 events.  Sophomores Mark Rusznak (50 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Nicholas Ng (200 IM, 100 back) each won two events, while seniors Holt Akers-Campbell (100 butterfly), Justin Maffett (100 freestyle), and John Coogan (200 freestyle) each won one.  Mark’s 50 free, Nicholas’ IM and 100 backstroke, and Holt’s IM all earned spots on the USN Top 10 list, while John earned new State qualifying times in both his events.  William Doak and Ben Tattersfield also contributed to relay wins.

Other standout swims came from Case Nieboer, who earned his first Region qualifying time in the 200 freestyle; Neil Zheng, who dropped six seconds in his 200 IM; and Scott Hickman and Juan Carlos Hernández, who both swam lifetime best times in the 50 freestyle.

This was our final dual meet of the semester.  The team returns to competition on January 10, when they take on Brentwood Academy and Father Ryan at Tennessee State University.
