USN Seniors Win Essay Contests

Mikeie Reiland won the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America essay contest asking students to evaluate how closely we have followed George Washington's advice about political parties. Ben Kurland won the Sertoma of Nashville Freedom Essay contest, which includes a $3,500 prize for his college expenses.
After his work was judged locally, regionally, and nationally, Mikeie became one of a handful of students to receive an all-expense paid trip to a session of the Washington Workshop's Congressional Seminar in Washington, D.C. in June. Read his essay.

Ben's essay addressed the timely topic: "The Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S.Constitution states 'all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.' Should the Fourteenth Amendment be construed to deny citizenship to children born in the USA to illegal aliens?"
