State Champion Quiz Bowl Team

by Tim Russell

At the end of March, the varsity high school Quiz Bowl team of Mark Arildsen, Abby Easton, Rebecca Ewing, Adam Hudnut-Beumler, and Noah Stafford traveled to Cookeville to compete in the annual gathering of the best of the best, the State Championship, open only to teams that have excelled in other tournaments throughout the year.
This year there gathered perennial luminaries such as Webb, MLK Magnet (a three-time champion), Hume-Fogg, and Ezell-Harding. Our squad had to face them all. Indeed, the very first match was against powerhouse Ezell.

It began with the USN squad jumping to an early lead, but the opposition was tenacious and answered question after question to close upon our score. However, our team maintained their focus...and their lead...and won the game. So went the subsequent rounds, as all team members answered most difficult questions to win each and every match and return to USN with a State Championship.
Congratulations to a truly amazing team! Excelsior!
