USN Ultimate Girls Compete at Deep Freeze

Mary Prasit
At the end of last month, the USN Girls' Ultimate Frisbee team competed at Deep Freeze in Chattanooga and finished the tournament 2-1.
Senior captain Jesse Shofner and veteran sophomore leader Sophia Jelsma led the relatively young team to victories over Atlanta International School and a Chattanooga women's team on Saturday.  Sophomores Coco Coyle and Nora May handled the disc well, while sophomore Hannah Heitz stifled AIS's offense with her intense defensive play.  USN's newest players, speedy sophomores Logan Sweet and Bennett Lemaster, demonstrated excellent instincts, and senior Emma Pingree-Cannon and junior Katie May contributed with multiple scores and defensive plays.

On Sunday, USN faced AIS again for the championship, and while USN charged back after an early deficit, the team was unable to overcome injuries and fatigue to beat AIS in spite of sophomore Jaisal Merchant's first ever layouts.  The take away from Deep Freeze is that the USN team is a very talented and determined group of girls who, with a bit more experience, will be a formidable opponent in the future.
