The USN high school swimming team took on Ensworth and Mount Juliet High School in a meet on Wednesday, November 10 in their first divisional meets of the year. Swimming in a “double dual meet” format, the combined team posted victories over both Ensworth (176-142) and Mount Juliet (181-145).
The boys' team defeated Ensworth by a score of 132-26 and Mount Juliet by a score of 118-52. Senior Michael Ng led the way, starting off his senior season by breaking a 14-year-old school record in the 200 freestyle, which formerly belonged to Matt West ’97. Michael also won the 100 breaststroke.
Other individual event wins came from Logan Jones (100 freestyle), Nicholas Ng (100 butterfly, and Holt Akers-Campbell (500 freestyle). The boys also captured all three relays, thanks also to contributions from Mark Rusznak, Alister Fazio, and Ben Tattersfield.
Additionally, freshman Will Jones earned his first Region qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke.
The girls, shorthanded by injuries, fell to Mount Juliet (93-63) and Ensworth (116-44). Junior Ellen Jones led the way, earning Region qualifying times in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Alison Zhong added a new Region cut to her repertoire in the 100 butterfly, and many other girls showed promise, tackling new and challenging events with verve and energy.
The team returns to the pool next Wednesday, November 17 to take on Centennial High School and Cookeville High School. The meet, held at Tennessee State University’s Gentry Center, begins at 5:45 P.M.
