Summer Camps

Here are two new camps to consider for summer, in addition to all the other great offerings you'll find at usn.org/summer: Summer Reading Camp: Comprehension Skills for the Reluctant Reader from June 28 - July 2 and Virtual Summer Camp in Quest Atlantis from July 19 - 23.

Going to 5th grade next year? Want to make summer reading easier and more enjoyable? Come read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH with expert guidance from Molly McSwiggin, USN Learning Specialist and Renaissance woman. Story content will be tied to fun, effective learning strategies using acting, drawing, creative movement, and writing (including journaling, poetry, and songwriting). These techniques improve students' abilities to visualize the events of the story, understand character and plot, and make inferences. By the end of the week, campers will complete a sizable portion of the book and leave with a packet to help them review the information before the start of school. Campers must bring their own copy of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

The Lower School computer lab will be the place to be the week of July 19-23 as Scott Merrick, Lower School Technology Coordinator, presents Virtual Summer Camp in Quest Atlantis: a safe, rich, and educationally sound online virtual environment for exploring and learning. This is a chance for rising 4th graders to rising 8th graders to dive into this engaging learning experience. Each day Questers will pursue knowledge and service under the umbrella of Seven Social Commitments: Compassionate Wisdom, Creative Expression, Environmental Awareness, Personal Agency, Healthy Communities, Social Responsibility, and Diversity Affirmation. We'll be exploring a virtual recreation of the real life Mesa Verde National Park, and then, time permitting, we'll delve into Quests that include a NASA space mission, a Frankenstein-like monster mystery, and more. We will also take time to learn how to build and create our own virtual art and architecture.

Register now. Questions about these or any of our other camps? Please contact John Kleiner at jkleiner@usn.org
