MS Girls' Soccer Team Claims HVAC Championship

by Lilly Sagar

The Tigers beat a tough Poplar Grove team in the HVAC Divison A tournament finals.
After a fun afternoon of team pictures and bonding activities, the Middle School girls' soccer team was ready to take the field in the HVAC Division A tournament finals.  It had been one week exactly since the Tigers had defeated Poplar Grove in the regular season.  We knew that it would be a tough game, as we were fairly evenly matched in the previous game.

Knowing that, win or lose, this would be our last game of the season, each player (and coach!) was ready to leave it all on the field.  The first few minutes were a bit slow as the Poplar Grove team was forcing us to play a lot of defense.  It wasn't long until our defense was able to clear the ball out up to our midfield and we were on the attack.  We maintained the ball our our offensive end for the majority of the first half.

With less than ten minutes to go in the first half, Nora Lee was able to find Whitley Cargile's feet in the box and Whitley took a strong shot which rebounded off the cross bar.  Luckily Whitley had the presence of mind to follow her shot and placed it behind the keeper for a goal.

The Tigers were able to dominate most of the second half.  Our defense was disciplined and played conservatively, as we knew we only had to keep them from scoring in order to win.  It was obvious that everyone wanted this championship, as everyone played smart and with their teammates.  It is especially great to see that each player on this team had a hand in winning this game.  Whether they played the entire game, or only a few minutes, each girl contributed to our success.

With a season less than eight weeks long, it is impressive how much these girls have improved.  This HVAC title was well deserved, and each player should be proud of herself and her teammates.

Go Tigers!
