Two hard-fought games, but both teams come up short.
The A-team was fired up to play one of their biggest rivals tonight! Harpeth Hall has had the reputation the last few years of being a girls' soccer power house and we were optimistic that our improved team would fare well this year. The first half was a tough one as we played much more defense than offense. We struggled to connect passes and were being hammered by the Harpeth Hall offense. A few little mistakes resulted in a trickled-in goal for the Honey Bears. We went into the second half down by one goal.
Going into the second half, we had much more energy and enthusiasm. Our defense was getting the ball up to our forwards and we had many more opportunities to score. Unfortunately, we let one more goal slip by us, and HH went up 2-0. The Tigers did not quit! We took the ball out of the net and immediately were on the attack. HH was called for a rough foul at the top of their box and Whitley Cargile put it away for a goal! We tried desperately to finish another goal to tie it up, but could not make it happen. Karishma Patel played a strong game at the outside midfield position keeping the ball up in our offensive third.
Although we did not come away with a win, these girls should hold their heads high for competing against a mature, talented team. It was fun to hear the girls say that they wanted to play this team again as soon as they exited the field!
The B-team took the field under the lights full of energy and ready to play after their big win last night. We have been working for the past few weeks on having an intended receiver of our passes, and in the first half we were still struggling to connect. Our defense did a great job clearing balls out of the back and won balls out of the air. We were able to keep the Honey Bears scoreless in the first half.
In the second half, our offense had so many more chances to score! We were enthusiastically cheering from the sidelines for Anna Hinman, Elise Blackburn, Katie Roth, and Gracie Hoffman! We thought for sure we'd put a few in. Unfortunately, each strike was a bit unlucky and the keeper was able to get a hand on it. HH was able to get one past us to go up by one goal and we were unable to answer.
Mikaela Rabb played a fantastic job in goal and is showing huge strides of improvement with every game. She definitely played a huge role in keeping HH to only one goal! Final Score: HH 1, USN 0.
