MS Athletics recap: August 22-29

Middle School athletics are off to a great start this year, with cross country, tennis, and volleyball leading the way. Catch up on this week's action in the athletics recap by Middle School Athletic Director Michael Scrutchin.
Cross Country
We had our kick-off at the first meet of the season. We didn't have many best times yesterday, and that's to be expected! Most of our best times come when we are at our best, and we still have many weeks to improve our running skills. Nonetheless, we did have two PRs: Brody Terker ’32 dropped a minute to run a 3rd-place time of 12:31, and Mila Kennedy ’32 shaved off 3 seconds in the 1.5-mile race.

We also had many athletes competing in a race for the first time, including our entire 2-mile girls' squad.

Yesterday's race demonstrated that we have developed some good race excitement and power behind our strides, but we still have room to grow in endurance. Again, this is what we expect at this point in the season.

The following runners demonstrated excellent splitting:
  1. Nick Keegan ’31 with an almost perfect even/negative split. He was 1 second faster in his second mile.
  2. Margaux Soslow ’31 (2-second difference, basically an even split.)
  3. Tyler Princehorn ’31 (8-second difference)
  4. Collins Spangler ’31 (10-second difference)
  5. Brody Terker ’32 (15-second difference)

Of course, we also care about the scores of the meet. As a reminder, team scores are calculated by adding the places of the top 5 runners from each team (lowest score wins), with the 6th and 7th place runners serving as displacers and tie-breakers. Teams must have at least five runners to place in the team scores, which means we automatically beat a few teams just by having more runners than they did.

GIRLS' TWO MILE: 5th Place (Margaux Soslow ’31, Eva Tanquilut ’31, Lucy Garrison ’30, Lena LeClere ’30, Corinna Collier ’30, Julia Ginsberg ’30, and Olive Lueken ’30)

BOYS' TWO MILE: 4th Place (Brody Terker ’32, Elliott Karpinos ’31, Ike Tift ’30, Rory Freiberg ’31, Booker Ammons ’31, Collins Spangler ’31, and Emmett Dryden ’30)

GIRLS' 1.5 MILE: 3rd Place (Noa Rodrigues ’32, Edith McLean ’33, Ava Warren ’32, Mila Kennedy ’32, Lucy Drewry ’33, Elaina Yu ’32,  and Avery Princehorn ’33)

BOYS' 1.5 MILE: 3rd Place (Narayan Chitale ’33, Win Nelson ’32, Solomon McKnight ’33, Dylan Hyatt ’32, Hudson Unger ’32, Lucas Munoz ’32, and Keshav Parikh ’32)

5th Grade Volleyball
  • The 5th Grade League Volleyball team had its inaugural game on Saturday, Aug. 23, in the WNSL/Harpeth Hall League. Some might say it is the first of its kind in the city of Nashville for this age level. The USN Tigers made history and walked away with their first-ever win in league play, a 2-0 victory over Ensworth. The first game was a come-from-behind nail-biter for a 26 - 24 win. The second game was won confidently, 25 -11, with a string of aces from Tennyson James ’33 and Cora Dawkins ’33.

  • The inaugural team was coached by Valerie Lopez, and the players on the team are June Bird ’33, Cora Dawkins ’33, Beste Erdemir ’33, Madilyn Howard ’33, Tennyson James ’33, Maggie Jansen ’33, Juliette Long ’33, Stella Luecke ’33, Anisha Shimpi ’33, and Alexis Small ’33.
6th Grade Volleyball
  • JV lost a hard-fought three-game match to FRA on Friday, Aug. 22, in Cheek Gym. Losing the first game 13 - 25, rebounding the game 25 - 23, and losing the tie-breaker 9 - 15.
  • Varsity won their three-game match against FRA. They stumbled out of the block in the first game, losing 9 - 25, before rebounding just like the JV for a 25 - 23 win in the second game, and decided to reverse the JV score for a 15 - 9 win in the third game and an overall 2 - 1 match win.
7th/8th Grade Volleyball
  • 7th/8th Volleyball had a thrilling night on Friday, Aug. 22, in Sperling Gym. JV beat BGA soundly, 2 -0. The first match was 25 - 6, and the second match was 25 - 14. The team put on a strong showing for their first home game.
  • Varsity lost a thrilling three-game match 1 - 2 to BGA. Missing a key player, the varsity team banded together and won the first game 25 - 18. They started off the second game strong, but a string of 6 to 8 points in a row from BGA halted their momentum. They rallied back with some strong serving of their own, but came up short, losing the second game 18 - 25. The tie-breaker game kept the fans in the stands on the edge of their seats, trading point for point with BGA. The game was tied 11-11 when BGA went on another scoring streak, and the varsity team ultimately lost the game 11-15, losing the overall match 1-2. Their current record stands at 1 - 1.
Girls Tennis
  • The tennis team had its annual Blue/Garnet Spirit Match on Friday, Aug. 22. The Tiger Scrimmage was won by the Blue Team 11 - 7.
