Librarians will observe National Crossword Puzzle Day and National Sock Day in December as they reinvigorate their student outreach with fun programming tied to specific days.

Here in the Hassenfeld Library, we’re reinvigorating our outreach to students this year by adding fun programming tied to specific days — the sillier the better. Talk Like a Pirate Day in September has been a favorite of librarians for years, but I’ve only learned recently of such October holidays as National Pumpkin Day and National Knock-Knock Joke Day. Listening to dozens of students tell us goofy knock-knock jokes all day was my favorite celebration so far. (Have you heard the one about the interrupting cow?)
In November, students came to the library to make intricate paper creations for World Origami Day and tested their skills at enunciation for International Tongue Twister Day. Prizes have included small candies, water bottle stickers, and (for High School students) Tiger Points. For Lower School students, these celebrations last all week so that students may join in the fun no matter which day is their library class day.
Coming up in December, we are excited to observe National Crossword Puzzle Day and National Sock Day.
And in March, we have some extra special plans already in the works for National Read Across America Day, which we will turn into a whole week-long event celebrating our community of readers at USN.
