Meet Grace Hu, USNA's inaugural Lower School Vice President, and get to know her better through this casual question and answer session with USNA Volunteer Coordinator Melanie Block. Visit usn.org/volunteer to get involved with USNA.
Q: Who are your children at USN? A: Gryffin Greenstone '33 and Max Greenstone '34
Q: How many years have you been involved at USN? A: This is our fourth year at the school.
Q: How are you/have you been involved at USN? A: I’ve volunteered in a few positions at USN, including Room Parent, Fall Book Frenzy, Artcletic, Helping Hands, Library Volunteer, and Staff Appreciation Coordinator. This year I will be helping in a new position as the USNA Vice President of Lower School as well as Room Parent.
Q: Why do you do it? A: When Gryffin started at USN, we were still relatively new to the Nashville community and didn’t know a lot of people at USN. I got involved with USNA hoping to meet some new parents, build community, and get to know the ins and outs of our school. It’s been a great way to get to know people outside of my kids' classrooms and grade levels.
Q: Do you have any words of wisdom for other volunteers? A: Get involved in our school as much as you can. Our school administrators and teachers can only do so much and need parents to chip in where they can. My philosophy is that school spirit is best with family involvement and encouragement.
Q: What would you like to see change? Stay the same? A: I think there’s an opportunity for better communication between USN/USNA and families. I keep pushing for the school to develop a mobile app so parents can easily obtain information about events, activities, fundraisers, etc. I love how strong our community is tied and never want to see that change.
Q: What do you love most about USN? A: The community is absolutely amazing at USN. We have made some wonderful friends who are all so warm, welcoming and genuinely like-minded.
Q: What else do you have going on in your life outside of volunteering at USN? A: I’m an avid traveler (although much less so than I would like). I love hiking, yoga, reading, cooking, baking, and trying new restaurants around town. I try to volunteer a couple times a year with Hands On Nashville across various organizations.
