3/25 - Sports of All Sorts Celebration

Lindsey Bachman
It was a beautiful, albeit blustery day at the River Campus, as our MS and HS track & field teams represented with pride during our Sports of All Sorts TF Celebration.

From start to finish, the Tigers lead the way from the front of the field. Out of 15 contested events, our boys team placed first in 11, sweeping all 4 relays and winning the 100, 200, 800, LJ, HJ, PV, and Discus, while our girls team fielded 5 top finishes across the 4x800, 100, 200, 400, HJ, and PV.

Big PRs was the theme of the day in field events. On the boys side, freshman Binyam Dunne kicked things off in the long jump with a winning jump of 19-3, nearly a 2ft improvement from his previous best. Up next sophomore Seth Prince literally soared to new heights with a clear of 5-10 (an 8inch best) to win the high jump, and finally to round things out, junior Kolter Chetkovich threw nearly a 15ft best to win discus with a mark of 94-2.4, and a 3ft best in shot, breaking the 30ft barrier for the first time, with a throw of 32-3.75! For the ladies, senior Olivia Jelsma earned a 3in best in the high jump to win with a clear of 4-10, followed by a second place finish and nearly 2ft improvement in shot put with a throw of 26-11. And finally, in the pole vault, freshmen Alexa Kahzanov and Ava Kavalahi both earned PRs with vaults of 6-6 and 6-0 respectively, led by senior Holly Schrieber who won the event with a final clear of 11-6 in difficult windy conditions.

In the running events, senior Sidney Ware blasted the competition in the 100m dash with a near school record breaking time and new PR of 10.86, and went on to run the anchor legs of our top finishing sprint relays, making a massive comeback after a botched final handoff in the 4x100 to win the race. Junior Alima Kassim dominated in both the 100m & 200m posting times of 12.04 and 24.97 ( which although not even personal PRs, still ranked her in the National Elite Performance category over the weekend, according to Milesplit). Two more commanding and PR sprint finishes came from freshmen Binyam Dunne and Braylin who went 1 & 2 in the 200 with times of 24.57 and 24.96 respectively. Finally, in the middle distance events, junior Harper Phillips battled the wind to a strong first place finish in the 400 with a time of 1:20, followed by a PR and win for freshman Ryder Ortner in the 800 who controlled the race from start to finish crossing the line in an impressive 2:03.

Complete meet results are available here.

Next up, three of our Tigers will go on to compete this Thursday and Friday at the Scott Hartman Invitational at Brentwood High School. Kassim and Ware both in the 100 & 200, and Ortner in the 1600 & 800. All of the Tigers will travel to MBA for a meet next Wednesday April 5th!
