The Class of 2021’s Harper Johnston is now working to combat climate change in between classes as an Environmental Studies and Journalism major at American University where she was recently named to the Dean’s List. In January, Johnston published an op-ed in The Tennessean educating readers on the environmental, and monetary, costs of grass lawns.
Catch up with Johnston to relive a few fond USN memories and find out how her time at 2000 Edgehill helped prepare her for her current role.
Q: Please share a favorite memory from your time at 2000 Edgehill.
A: I loved eating lunches outside on [Vanderbilt's Magnolia Lawn] and playing Spikeball games with my friends.
Q: How did your USN education prepare you for the work you're doing today?
A: USN really fostered my creative writing style as well as my voice on the page, even in more academic papers.
Q: What's one piece of advice you have for current USN students?
A: I would say to completely apply yourself in your classes. You will forget the grades. But learning how to learn and learning how to study are priceless lessons that will carry you through college and careers.
