Books can help you celebrate Black history all year long
Black History Month may be drawing to a close, but you can read great books by Black authors all year long. Continue reading for some highlights from our library collection.

High School's Black Student Union put together a fantastic display and bulletin board they called the Black Book Club. They chose four authors for this display: James Baldwin, Yaa Gyasi, Kiese Laymon, and Alice Walker. These books include memoirs, historical and contemporary fiction, personal essays, and poetry.

Another poet we are particularly excited about is Ed Roberson, who visited USN on February 13 & 14 as our 2023 Author in Residence. We have several of his poetry collections and they are well worth your time.
Picture book biographies are an excellent way to learn more about Black history, even if you think you’ve outgrown them. Between their vibrant illustrations, stories that are easy to follow, and often additional material at the back of the book, picture books are an ideal introduction to a new topic. We’ve chosen the best recent picture book biographies about notable Black Americans in this list, from NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson to architect Philip Freelon, from painter Alma Thomas to medical pioneer Vivien Thomas to local civil rights hero Diane Nash, and many more.

Spring sports season ends with podium finishes, trophies
The girls lacrosse team ended its season in overtime to become state runner-up. Tennis players Carter Kojetin '29 finished as a state quarterfinalist, Sophie Oliver '26 and Mary Kate Adler '28 finished as state semifinalists, and Veer Kodali '29 and Max Parker '29 finished as state champions. Meanwhile, eight runners competed at the state track and field meet in Knoxville, where Griffin Davidson '27, Caleb Freifeld '28, Drew Zwerner '28, and Jack Fruin '27, sprinted to first in the 4x800m relay and Jack also placed first in the 800m dash.Read More -

Middle School Quiz Bowl competes at national championship
The Middle School Quiz Bowl finished off another successful season with a trip to the Middle School National Championship Tournament in Chicago. The team fought hard and ended the season as a top-100 program in the country, finishing 75th overall. Congratulations to the team on a great performance and to Lucas Lupu ’31, named an All Star for being the fifth-highest scorer nationwide.Read More
