By Bakari King, Middle School Theater Director
On Thursday, January 12, 31 Middle School theater students embarked on a five-day musical theater extravaganza at the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta. With MS Theater Director Bakari King leading the way, the group of young thespians was tasked with the challenge of recreating a 15-minute journey through "Willy Wonka Jr.," which students performed in full in August 2022 to kick off the academic year.
This was the 20th anniversary of the festival, and it did not disappoint. During the festival, the students performed for Broadway actors and instructors, watched part of the original cast of "Mean Girls," and partied with over 6,000 other school-age lovers of musical theater.
The students were amazing, and two came away with awards. Basil Broemel '28 and Olivia Westfall '27 wowed the judges and were both recognized with All-Star Awards. Additionally, Olivia received an Outstanding Individual Performer Award, an honor given to only 12 students out of the 6,000 performers.
We are so proud of all of these thespians and can't wait for next year.
Fresh off the excitement of Homecoming Week, Lower School students and families can keep the school-spirited fun going by attending Lower School Spirit Night on Friday, January 27. Plan to make an evening of it. There will be plenty of options for everyone and lots of basketball.
