More great performances at Southern Showcase

The cross country teams ran exceedingly well at the hyper-competitive Southern Showcase in Huntsville.
Another Saturday, another great set of performances for the cross country teams! The bus rolled out at a very dark 5am, and headed for Huntsville and probably the most competitive race in the Southeast.

The varsity boys went first and were led by the usual “big three,” with Austin Cason in front and Ryder Ortner and Eli Galentino not far behind. Elijah McKnight ran a very fast first mile in, well, his very first 5k but hung on to be our fourth runner, just ahead of PRs from Simon Fox and Brock Burgess. Caspar Schmidt lost a timing chip and had a shoe come undone but still ran a fine race as our seventh runner.

The varsity girls went next, led once again by Auldyn Plant far up the large field, supported by an excellent pack of four runners separated by less than a minute - Cléo Gauthier, Liv O’Hara, Grace Boero, and Alice Frein. Olivia Hess was right behind and Chloe Cmelak was the seventh runner, hampered by side stitches but running bravely nevertheless.

As it heated up, with no shade on the course, the racing conditions toughened but the Tigers were up to the challenge, as many JV runners worked for best times and all put in great efforts. Notable time drops came from Morgan McAteer, Sarah Kate Esquivel, Drew Brackett, Henry Stack, Sam Lustig, and Brandon Fonseca. Kudos also to Bennett Dickerson for his first 5k!

The teams will get back to work this week and next with our next competition a night-time race at Sanders Ferry in Hendersonville on October 1st, when we’ll be joined by the boys’ basketball and lacrosse teams. Come on out and cheer for us!

Thanks as always,
Coaches Bachman, Flatau, McKay, and St. Cyr
