DASH educates on Field Day

High School club dedicated to educating its peers on drugs, alcohol, and student health keeps classmates on track at Field Day.
With High School at the River Campus for a sunny day of Field Day fun, students in DASH found a way to educate their peers while entertaining and maintaining the overall energetic atmosphere of the annual day of games and camaraderie.

DASH, which is a student ground led by High School Counselor Beth Eberl, facilitates conversations and provides information about drugs, alcohol, and student health within the High School community. The group cleverly found a way to execute its mission to “promote safe and educated decisions regarding drugs and alcohol” by sponsoring HS Field Day’s 100-yard dash.

As High Schoolers raced their peers down the track, they were reminded that DASH students are always there to help build a safe, honest, and open environment at USN where students can discuss their emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing.

What’s more, the 100-yard dash wrapped up with a skit performed by DASH club members. Wearing costumes to represent runners who had consumed substances including cigarettes, alcohol, and energy drinks, the club members acted out the negative effects each substance could have on adolescents as it pertains to their athletic abilities and overall health. Each runner representing a substance was stopped, slowed down, or held back by their choice to consume; meanwhile, the healthy runner took the lead and victory in the skit.

DASH’s presence at HS Field Day was one of many ways in which the club has been active on campus this spring. The club conducts monthly social norms surveys to poll the HS student body on a variety of topics including drugs, mental health, alcohol, and energy drink consumption, and the group frequently hosts talks featuring experts from the Nashville community that pertain to drug addiction, alcoholism, and how to make safe decisions surrounding these substances. Students in the club joined eighth grade classes to present the dangers and risks of vaping as they prepare to enter High School.

Stay tuned for more engaging, entertaining, and informative activities and presentations from DASH as the remainder of the school year unfolds and for years to come.
