High School show choir students will take the stage for the first time in more than two years on Thursday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. Students, faculty, staff, families, and other community members are invited to attend “Phenomenal,” a production that spans musical genres and time periods paying homage to influential women in the music industry.
The show, named after poet Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman” celebrates female phenoms who helped shape today’s musical landscape and features songs by entertainment icons including Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, and Madonna.
“I have a small class roster of just seven girls,” Hammonds shared. “While that could be seen as a challenge by some, my team, my students, and I really saw it as an opportunity to do something that’s not just a lot of fun, but meaningful to these girls, and hopefully to many audience members.”
What exactly can audience members expect from the concert? The group of what Hammonds refers to as seven “dynamite solo singers” will take to the stage to serve up the beguiling glitz and glamor often associated with a female songstress at the height of her career with poise, power, confidence, and theatricality on full display.
“Being in the audience will be a really interesting experience,” said Kari Belle King '24, who is one of the students performing. “It’s just going to be a night of nonstop entertainment.”
Truly a feminine force, the show’s music is arranged by Hammonds herself with occasional input from her students. The production has required tremendous dedication from the students including hours-long weekend rehearsals and has forged a sisterhood bond between the students on stage. The show will take place in the Auditorium with ticketing information forthcoming. Get a behind-the-scenes

In addition to the High School show choir's live performance, audiences will be treated to the premiere of Middle School show choir's music video adaptation of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from Disney's hit, animated film, "Encanto." The Middle School class put its spin on this popular Lin Manuel Miranda tune in a video entirely produced and directed by students. After a semester of hard work, students are excited to share their finished product with a supportive audience of USN community members.
