Tigers drop a heartbreaker to Pope Prep

It was a game of runs and Pope Prep went on theirs right at the end to win the game.
It's always a great game when we play on the turf at Pope Prep and this year was no exception.  We played evenly throughout the first half and went into the break with a 6-5 lead.  Our focus for the second half was to clean up our ground ball pick-ups and value possession of the ball above all else.  Pope Prep came out strong and took a 9-6 lead with 10 minutes to play.  The Tigers came roaring back and took the lead, 10-9, with only 3 minutes to play.

We traded goals and went into the last 2 minutes of the game with an 11-10 lead.  We gave up the equalizer while in a man-down situation with a player in the penalty box.  The draw was won by Pope Prep and they were able to get past our goalie to make it 12-11 with less than 45 seconds to play.  Unable to win the final draw, USN was at the mercy of Pope Prep as they maintained possession to win the game.

It was hard-fought and felt disappointing to finish on the losing side after such a great effort.  We learned a lot about how to work the clock when we're up in a close game and how much the fundamentals matter!

Lia Payne '22 was our leading scorer with 8 of our 11 goals.  Kate Vaughn had a killer game in goal with 10 saves.  GO TIGERS!
