It was a beautiful day for softball and for USN’s first game of the season. With a lot of new players and limited field practice due to weather, many were rightfully nervous to play. However, that nervous energy quickly changed into excitement when USN took advantage of Ensworth’s pitching and fielding errors, which gave them a solid lead throughout the game. The offense made smart plays and great steals, so the next big test was our pitching and defense. USN has two new pitchers both of whom are 6th graders, Josie Vogt and Abby Atkins. For their first game they did great! They each had a strike out and they each fielded a ball to first for outs. Our infield also had some great plays throughout the game.
Lulu Rose Gilberd fielded a ground ball to Zarah Ansari at 2nd and got the forced-out. On the flip side, an inning later Zarah fielded the ball and tossed it to Lulu Rose who covered second! Our two new catchers also made fantastic plays. Victoria White had many great blocks and stops and did well adapting to Abbey’s pitches and the notes the Coaches were giving out. She even got an awesome tag-out at home base, preventing another Ensworth run. Abigail Weinman, our second catcher, also performed well! She had a different defensive style than Victoria, and had two notable plays. The first was on a pass ball, she tracked it down and made a great toss to Josie, who covered home plate, which led to a tag-out! The other was by accident, which makes it that much better. The second was when Josie had two strikes on the batter, and on the next pitch the batter tipped it right into Abigail’s waiting glove, which gave USN the out! It was definitely a learning experience for both teams and it makes the rest of the season super exciting for the team’s growth and improvement!
