HS Swimming wins in Lebanon

Justin Karpinos
The USN HS swimming team traveled to Lebanon on Friday to take on Green Hill, Lebanon, Central Magnet, and Mount Juliet in our first meet of the semester, after our scheduled January 8 meet was canceled because of weather concerns.

The USN girls swept the day, earning wins over Green Hill (84-68), Central Magnet (89-63), Lebanon (95-33), and Mount Juliet (100-18).

They were led by double winners Olivia Barbieri ’25 and Kara Grace Hess ‘23.  Barbieri won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Hess took the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Barbieri’s 100 backstroke, notably, improved her to fourth on the USN all-time top 10 list.  Just 1/100th of a second behind Hess in the 100 butterfly was teammate Olivia Schwarz ’24, who also earned an individual win in the 200 IM.  Barbieri, Schwarz, and Hess teamed up with Caroline Cramer ’22 to win the 200 medley relay, and with Emma Schwarz ’24 to win the 400 freestyle relay.

Other notable swims on the girls’ side came from: Jessica Penilton ’24, who dropped 5 seconds in the 100 freestyle, and Ray Nakagawa ‘25, who earned a new Region cut in the 100 backstroke.

The USN boys also won all their dual meet matchups, defeating Green Hill (83-78), Central Magnet (100-51), and Lebanon (107-18).  Mount Juliet did not field a boys’ team at the meet.

USN trailed Green Hill by one point going into the final relay, but a first-place finish from Jacob Rothman ’23, Owen Block ’23, William Grobmyer ’22, and Leo Frein ’25 resulted in an 8 point swing in the Tigers’ favor, giving them the meet. Block and Grobmyer were also part of the winning 200 freestyle relay, where they joined by Sawyer Beckwith ’25 and Arnav Reddy ’22.

There were no individual event winners on the boys’ side, but a string of 2-3 finishes kept the Tigers in the meet.

Team scores aside, we were excited to see some good racing in multiple events. Jack Wellons ‘24 and Isaac Spiller ‘24 both posted two lifetime best swims, and Wellons earned a new Region cut in the 100 breaststroke.  Block, Daniel Stark ‘23, and Reddy each had one lifetime best.

We were also excited to see several swimmers getting better as the meet progressed; finishing well in multiple races has been a point of emphasis for us since December.

The Tigers have one more regular season meet on Saturday, January 22, which will serve as our Senior Day. After then, the focus shifts towards the Region and State championship meets.
