USN won 4-2! Piper Petraglia and Ava Kavalali scored one goal each and then Corina Chalos scored two! BUT it was USN's midfielders and defenders that really stepped it up!
What appeared to be a rainy, gloomy day, turned into a beautiful evening for soccer. Between USN warming up in the rain and Harding being late, it was an odd start to USN's last JV game of the season. However, that did nothing to deter this team's determination to win. Early on Piper Petraglia put USN on top, creating a wave of confidence throughout the team. However, throughout the first half the defenders and midfielders played disconnected and with too much space between them, leaving a lot of space in USN's defensive third for Harding's midfielders and forwards to wreak havoc. Due to an ill-placed handball, Harding got a penalty kick, putting Ansley (Ace) Martin in a tough position. Even though she'd played tough defense, this shot found its way high into the net. The second Harding goal came from a miscommunication between defenders and midfield, letting a Harding forward penetrate right down the middle of the 18 yard box and toe ball a long shot. USN ended the half down 1-2.
The second half started a lot better all across the board. There was a significant improvement in play! Midfield was aggressive and committed to help on defense, the defenders were keeping better shape, and the forwards were applying pressure early to control the tempo of the game. Due to some great midfield play by Caroline McCarver, who showed leadership and tenacity, Corina Chalos was able to find space to dribble in the 18 yard box and shooting a great shot, tying the game up 2-2! Quickly following that, USN had a great cross that went through Harding's 18 yard box, while none of USN's forwards and midfielders were able to make solid contact, Ava Kavalali was waiting back post side and was able to score again! With USN in the lead 3-2, it was imperative that they buckle down on defense. And due to Alayna Thompson, Margot Phillips, Lucy Gibbs, Lydia Kim, and new goalie Josie Vogt, there was nothing to worry about. They adjusted their shape, played high and aggressive, and had great long balls and clears out of USN's defensive third. On a bad goal kick that went right to Corina, she was able to convert yet another goal for USN! The final score was USN 4-Harding 2.
The first and second halves were a tale of two teams. The first half it looked like USN had improved, but still weren't playing cohesively. But the second half showed how well the players can make adjustments. The errors that they had in the first were not present in the second. Everyone did their part in this game and showed improvement, but the best thing was to watch all the players cheer for each other and have each other's backs. Truly a great way to end the season!
As part of a longstanding tradition, retired teachers and professionals from USN over the years came together to celebrate, connect, and reminisce during their annual luncheon in Durnan Auditorium.
