Lost 4-25 and 7-25 to Brentwood, but don't let the box score fool you.
Two matches later and now it was finally the 6th grade team’s turn to play! Some players had only practiced volleyball twice in their entire lives, others only two weeks, but this team, while nervous, was super excited to apply what they’ve learned and even studied in an actual match.
Captain of the game Kendall Puzniak won the first serve for the Tigers, providing the young team the chance to strike first! The first rallies and serves went really well. There was great communication, energy, and movement from inexperienced players, even when mistakes were made the encouragement from the bench and fans kept the team’s spirits high. The rude awakening came in the form of a 6th grade jump-server on Brentwood. As quickly as it began it ended. While players were diving and making contact with the ball, the speed and power was just too jarring to handle. Brentwood finished the first set 4-25.
The amazing thing was this team’s resilience. In the huddle they seemed ready for another round, not willing to give up and with a strong desire to get better. Lindley Davidson led the charge with some amazing serves and at least 2 of them were aces! Brentwood was shocked at the level of spirit and fight still left in USN. But as soon as the team gathered their footing, the jump server again took to blasting through the defense. 7-25. Match.
It’s easy to say they lost due to inexperience, but this team didn’t care about that. They weren’t focused on what the other team was doing or what they could do physically, these 6th graders were looking at each other and asking, “am I doing what I need to do? Did I focus on my personal goals? Did I do what I needed to do for my team?” And if you were to ask all the dedicated fans and proud coaches, I think they’d say, “YES!” Here's to a bright season!
