USN Latin students placed second in AAAA (highest division) of the Tennessee Junior Classical League Mid-State Tournament at the Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet High School on Wednesday, February 12. Led by High School Latin Teacher Diane Sorrel, 33 Latin students scored 876 points competing in Academic, Creative Arts, Graphic Arts, and Certamen (Latin Quiz Bowl).

After a weather delay, the tournament finished up with the Certamen (Latin Quiz Bowl) Competition on Saturday, February 22 at Montgomery Bell Academy. USN’s Novice Certamen Team of Maya Guha '24, Laney Drew Hirt '24, Laura Grace Hirt '24, and Sarah Page-McCaw '24 won its competition. The Intermediate Certamen Team of Adeolu Ajayi '22, Sam Barocas '23, and Philip Feaster '23 made it to the finals and placed third.

Caroline Keiper '25 led all USN students scoring 90 points. She had the second most number of points on the academic competitions of any student from any school. Laney and Sarah each scored 62 points. And David Luffman '20 scored 60 points. Emma Vogeli '22 placed third among all students in the Creative Arts competitions.

Adeolu, Sarah, Mason Lee '20, Sam Luffman '25, and Neha Saggi '21 were recognized for having the highest score on an Academic Test among all competitors at any level (not just at their own level).

Caroline, David, Laney, Collin Chan '25, Esha Karam '21, Greta Li '22, and Sheeline Yu '21 also won Academic Competitions at their level.

Maya won the Costume Female Mythological Competition. Emma placed first in the Miscellaneous Category of the Graphic Arts Competition. She was third among all students in the Creative Arts competitions.
