Girls Earn USN's First-Ever Podium Finish at MTHSSA Championship

In case you missed it, yesterday was simply the best I've ever seen our USN team race. Period. When I say race, I don't necessarily mean swim, I mean racing for the sake of racing. Being neck and neck with the person next to you and watching you kick it into another gear. We had PR's across the board, we rewrote the USN middle school record books, and the best part was you did it with a smile on your face.
 
I was approached at the end of the night by the director of the meet and a few of the folks at the officials table, who were all singing your praises. And I quote, "this is the best USN team we have ever seen." I would like to echo their sentiments but for other reasons than fast swims. You all warmed-up like champs in a crowded two lanes (I wonder where we got so comfortable doing that...), you were behind your block READY before every race, and at the end of the day I came back to bleachers that were cleaned up and spotless. 
 
Now for some accolades, team first of course! As it turns out there were actually 78 schools represented, two of them being single sex (Harpeth Hall and MBA). Our boys finished 12th out of 77, narrowly missing a top-10 distinction by 12 points. The girls finished in third place out of 77 teams, earning the first podium finish for any USN team ever. In the combined results, we came in fourth place, the highest finish in USN history! 

We broke eight all-time school records including Leo Frein's 200 IM, Dhruv Reddy's 500 Free, the boys 400 free relays of Dean Stevenson, Dhruv Reddy, Mark Luschen, and Leo Frein. Olivia Schwarz's 200 Free, Anna Hulan's 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke, and the girls 200 medleys and 200 freestyle relays of Olivia S, Olivia B, Tate B, and Anna H.
 
And how could I not mention our USN/DCA swimmer Mack Schumann, he managed to rack up 31 points for his 500 free and the 100 breast. DCA finished 23rd in the boys standings... oh yeah, and he's the only DCA swimmer on the team!
 
As for some other cool things that happened yesterday... our girls 200 relay was the No. 1-seed after prelims and got to pick their own walkout music for finals, we wore tutu's, we played rock paper scissor relay during finals warm-up, we stayed together, we were cheering behind the blocks not just in the stands. 
 
We will be highlighting individual improvement at practice this week, during our traditional, "story time" after warm-up. But our work here is not done! We have to turn our attention to the upcoming HVAC Championship meet.
