Young programers race robots

Students in Middle School Educational Technologist Kari Luecke's programming class built robots and had them compete in a series of challenges.

Seventh and eighth grade coders squared off in our first ever VEX IQ competition on Thursday, December 12. It was an intramural competition of sorts, with students from the A-day Intro to programming elective class facing those from the B-day class.

Over the preceding several weeks, in small groups students designed and built their bots, then they programmed them to move, reach, and grasp. In the competition table, known as the field, they earned points based on their bot’s success in moving balls and boxes in specific ways.

It was quite an adventure to actually compete.  As one student explained after his team’s first competition, “This is way harder than it actually looks.”

We hope to continue to grow student interest in robotics competition and take on teams from area schools in the new year. Stay tuned.
