Cross Country Opens Regular Season in Alabama

A great way to kick off the official racing season for the 2019 USNXC teams! In increasingly steamy conditions, the runners put on a show of historic proportions.

The girls led off in the small schools race, putting veterans Mia Owen, Latham Hall, and Abby Schoenecker in the top part of the field, with newcomer Ava Cason hanging right behind. Mia and Latham would crack the top-25, with Abby in the top-50, while Ava fought through fatigue to her first 5k finish as our fourth runner. Laurel McKay and Nell Cox came in right near each other to close out the team scoring. Kudos to Serena Mukherji on her first 5k, and to Victoria Christianson-Galina and Cecilia Yezbak on their first varsity runs! The girls finished eighth out of 25 teams, a fine start to a promising season.

The boys ran up a division in the large schools race and were up to the challenge. The top boys hit the first mile under five minutes and kept going from there. When the actual dust settled, Nick Sieders is the new school 5k record holder (Skyler Moots ‘07 had held it for 13 years!), and Timmy Hays also broke the previous record, as they went 16:01 and 16:04, respectively. Pelham Bergesen wasn’t far behind, and then Neil Narayanan and Piers Mason both ran big PRs to close out the team scoring. Jonathan Nichols wasn’t far back in a big PR as well, and Collin France did great work stepping into varsity as a freshman with Oscar Fox nursing an injury. The team averaged under 17 minutes per runner for 5k, a school record, and finished 6th of 44 teams - the top 5 teams average 1750 students in their HS, so it was a huge performance.

The boys’ JV wasn’t to be outdone and there were many spectacular performances, led by Tyler Schoenecker, Nicholas Beem, Taylor Hartman, and Tate Keuler all right around 20 minutes. Notable efforts from the many, many new runners - Carter Brooks, Jacob Green, Max Yazdian, Isaac Chomsky, Ethan Li, Blake Perdikis, Santiago Olivares-Mejia, Thomas Luschen.

It was a great starting point, and now the team will battle even hotter weather as we continue to build our fitness! Thanks for excusing the students early on Friday!
