Tigers end spring seasons
A recap of the final tennis, track & field state meets.

Girls’ Track and Field State Meet Results
The Division II Class A girls’ pole vault final kicked off the state started off the 2019 campaign for USN. Our lone field event competitor, Holly Schreiber ’23, stayed true to form and won the pole vault with a personal best effort of 11’1’’.

During the afternoon session, things got rolling, we posted some great efforts, and our team placed 6th overall (out of 24).
4x800 placed fourth with a time of 10:39.57, running four consistent legs with even splits. Eden Horton ’22, Latham Hall ’22, Abby Schoenecker ’21, and Mia Owen ’21 posted their best time of the year.
In the 100m dash, Morayo Kassim ’22 placed second, and Chloe Bruce ’22 placed fifth while both had good starts and competed well in a loaded field with a blanket finish. Two FAT cameras had to determine the finish line data, and both girls raced well.
The team 4x200m place third. Running 1:46.55 with clean exchanges with no errors ended with a podium finish for Izzy Lutes ’20, Ryane Swope ’20, Morayo, and Chloe.
Running the 4x400 in 4:17.04, a 10-second improvement is a lot to be proud of for Chloe, Izzy, Mia, and Morayo.

Morayo decimated a talented field by posting an exceptional win in the 200m with 24.83. Morayo defeated the three-time state champ handily from the start, pulling away from the field down the home stretch and ran the fastest time of the evening. Full results are here.
Boys’ Track State Meet Results
Our boys saved the best for last as we capped off the night with two state titles in the closing events of the meet program at Middle Tennessee State University. Our boys’ team placed fourth out of 26 Division II Class A teams.

Hot and breezy conditions were in the order of the day, as was the hot competition from around the state. We opened the meet with the 4x800 team’s eighth place despite running three freshmen in this event. Wilson Berry ’21 did a great job leading Jon Nichols ’22, Tate Keuler ’22, and Piers Mason ’22.
Timmy Hays ’20 placed second and Nick Sieders ’21 placed third in a tactical 1600m race and came away with strong finishes for a podium spot.
Jordan Turner ’22 capped off a sensational freshman season at the state meet by placing sixth in the high hurdles and fourth in the 300m intermediate hurdles. He was the only ninth grader in his events.
Despite being new to the event, Jonathan Ghertner ’19 consistently improved meet by meet and earned a berth to the state meet last week. This evening he did not disappoint by taking down his opponents in the last 50m and placing fourth overall.
As the lights came on and the sun went down, the temps also began to cool off the track. It became the Pelham Bergesen ’20 and Neil Narayanan ’21 show in the boys’ 800m as they ran away from the field and placed 1st and 2nd, finishing together.
The final event of the meet was a 4x400 relay with Jonathan Ghertner ‘19 leading off even with the field. Neil blew the race open with an assertive second leg, Pelham maintained on the third leg, and Josh Scretchen ’22 held off one opponent right at the finish line for a state championship. Tennis Finals
The boys’ and girls’ teams both lost in the state quarterfinals on Friday, May 17. The girls traveled to Memphis to take on the top-seeded Gryphons of St. George’s Independent School. Mia Pretorius ’19 was still on court when the final tally fell in favor of the Gryphons for the 4-0 sweep. The boys’ team hosted Notre Dame from Chattanooga in its quarterfinal match and could not pull off the win as George Corzine ’19 was the only player to pick up a win in singles play and the Tigers season ended 4-1.

The result was four individual players representing USN at the state final four in singles play. Mia, Neha Saggi ‘21, and Harper Johnston’21 represented the girls’ team and dropped their quarterfinal matches against some top-ranked teams from St. George’s and Knoxville Webb respectively. George was the sole representative on the side, and he advanced to the state semifinal match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over his quarterfinal competitor from Jackson Christian. He faced the number one seed from Memphis at St. George’s in the semifinals and dropped his final match 6-3, 6-1.
