Chemistry Olympiad team named runner-up

Students were collectively named runners up in the region Runner-Up. Congratulations to Hannah '19 and Timothy Hays '20, who advance to take the Chemistry Olympiad test in April.

Eight intrepid students traveled to Cookeville early Friday, March 1 to compete in the Nashville section of the American Chemical Society’s Chemistry Olympiad test. The test consists of a challenging written test and two laboratory experiments: one with a prescribed procedure and one mystery lab. Top scorers in the section advance to the national level of the testing process and thereafter the international level.

This year’s edition had the most-ever participating schools and students, and USN students did well, given the tough competition. In the team competition, the fearsome foursome of Hannah Laibinis '19, Neha Mehta '20, Trevor Zou '20, and Cole McMillan '20 finished third overall. Individually, Timothy Hays '20 finished ninth and Hannah and Cole tied for 10th, with Timothy and Hannah advancing to next month’s national level exam.

The students did fantastic work and were positive and dedicated. To quote the wordsmith Ice Cube, “it was a good day.”
