Twenty-three members of the USN Swimming team traveled to Lebanon on Saturday morning to compete in the Middle Tennessee Invitational.

The boys finished second overall out of ten teams behind Bob Jones High School (the 2010 Alabama State Champions), while the combined team finished third behind Bob Jones and Smyrna High School.

The boys were led by individual event winners Michael Ng (100 backstroke) and Mark Rusznak (500 freestyle).  Michael also finished second in the 100 freestyle, while Mark took third in the 200 freestyle.  Nicholas Ng contributed second place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.  Other scoring swims came from Holt Akers-Campbell (3rd in the 100 butterfly, 5th in the 200 IM), John Coogan (5th in the 100 backstroke, 7th in the 200 free), Alister Fazio (6th in the 100 butterfly), and William Doak (7th in the 100 butterfly).  William Doak also added three very strong legs to all our relays.  The boys’ 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays each placed second, while the 200 freestyle relay placed third.

Other outstanding swims came from Daniel Pannock, who joined the Region team in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, Ben Ghertner, who dropped another second in the 100 freestyle and broke a minute for the first time, and Brandon Waterman, who swam fifteen seconds faster in the 500 freestyle than he did on Wednesday.

The girls, with only six swimmers competing, still managed to finish in the top half of teams at the meet.  The 200 medley relay team (Alison Zhong, Ellen Jones, Sarah Alberts, McKenzie Andrews) finished fourth, and the same girls finished fifth in the 200 freestyle relay.  Alison added two top-8 finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyles, while Ellen scored in the 100 breaststroke.

Freshman Julianna Lewis added two lifetime bests, while senior Nina Weiss earned two seasonal bests.

The team’s final meet of the semester will be Tuesday, December 7 at Smyrna High School.
