Henry '17 named Truman Scholar
Former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, President of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, announced Henry Hicks '17 is a recipient of the premier graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders in the United States.
Students were nominated by their institution based on their records of leadership, public service, and academic achievement. Finalists interviewed with the Foundation’s Regional Review Panels between this spring and scholars were named in April. Each Truman Scholar receives up to $30,000 for graduate study. Scholars also receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunities within the federal government.
Hicks, the only scholar from Tennessee, is studying comparative American studies and creative writing with a concentration in identity and diversity at Oberlin College. He is particularly passionate about addressing racial inequities and voter suppression. His experience in legislative spaces informs this passion, previously working in both internship and staff positions in the United States House of Representatives and Senate. His community organizing experience as a field organizer for the Kamala Harris For the People campaign in Waterloo, Iowa, has given him insight into how to combine public policy with grassroots organizing around racial justice and voting rights. On campus, Hicks is active with Student Senate, Oberlin’s Equity and Diversity Committee, the Oberlin College Democrats, and several student publications. After graduating, he intends to pursue a JD/MPA to fight for equity in the democratic process.

Spring sports season ends with podium finishes, trophies
The girls lacrosse team ended its season in overtime to become state runner-up. Tennis players Carter Kojetin '29 finished as a state quarterfinalist, Sophie Oliver '26 and Mary Kate Adler '28 finished as state semifinalists, and Veer Kodali '29 and Max Parker '29 finished as state champions. Meanwhile, eight runners competed at the state track and field meet in Knoxville, where Griffin Davidson '27, Caleb Freifeld '28, Drew Zwerner '28, and Jack Fruin '27, sprinted to first in the 4x800m relay and Jack also placed first in the 800m dash.Read More -

Middle School Quiz Bowl competes at national championship
The Middle School Quiz Bowl finished off another successful season with a trip to the Middle School National Championship Tournament in Chicago. The team fought hard and ended the season as a top-100 program in the country, finishing 75th overall. Congratulations to the team on a great performance and to Lucas Lupu ’31, named an All Star for being the fifth-highest scorer nationwide.Read More
