NPL reading challenge begins

Get a  jump on summer reading by signing up for the Nashville Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Challenge. It will be a bit different this year. Read on for details and ideas for the challenge. You do not need to have a library card to participate.

Tornadoes, derechos, power outages, oh my! With the many challenges Nashville has endured over the last several weeks, the team at the Nashville Public Library is offering a little positivity to our lives by launching the Summer Reading Challenge a bit early this year.

This summer-long initiative gives you and your children the opportunity to log the time you spend reading and earn free prizes for your efforts. Although NPL is closed at this time, the Summer Reading Challenge continues. The more minutes you read, the more prizes you earn. Prizes will be available for pick up once the library reopens.

Joining is simple. Just visit the Summer Reading Challenge website, register your account, and start logging your minutes spent reading. You can log your minutes directly on the website, or download the READsquared app to your mobile device and log your minutes there. The Summer Reading Challenge website also contains a link to print out a paper log.
 
We are encouraging you to think outside the box when it comes to engaging with reading. Books and eBooks count, of course, but there are other ways to participate. This year, any time you spend reading anything counts, as does writing, or even telling someone a story.  
 
Consider trying audiobooks, newspapers, magazines, comics, and graphic novels. Look through USN’s LibGuide page for free digital materials. If you have an NPL library card, animated storybooks like those featured on BookFlix are available. All count towards completing the challenge. So does reading traffic signs, historical markers, advertisements, and other signs while you go on a walk. Do you keep a journal? That counts, too. You can also count watching any of the NPL live streaming storytimes. You get the idea. Get creative.
 
NPL has set a city-wide goal of 20 million minutes. Let’s help the city reach that goal by registering and logging your reading today.
