Zeitgeist is April 26

Get to know the Zeitgeist Club through a Q&A session with Bronson Schmidt '25. The student-organized music festival takes place Friday, April 26 on the back lawn.
Q: What is the mission of your club/org?
A: Zeitgeist's mission is to platform students' musical voices and talent through school-backed student performances. In other terms, we just want a fun and low-key space for students to perform what they're passionate about through music, standup, poetry, or whatever works well on a stage. One of our main goals is to keep everything as low-pressure and student-orientated as possible to host shows that anyone can enjoy, be it performers or audiences.

Q: How many years has your club/org been in existence?
A: Zeitgeist is one of the longest-running clubs at USN, with it starting in the mid-90s or so old that most of the current faculty was either not yet working for USN or enrolled as students here during the time it was created.

Q: What does your club/org hope to accomplish this school year?
A: Aside from our usual big events, this year we're hoping to act as the go-to club for all student music-related happenings by having a network of past performers to suggest for other events. We're hoping to use the platform of Zeitgeist's shows to give opportunities to perform those talents.

Q: Does your club/org have any upcoming events?
This year, Zeitgeist leadership is going to host the two classic USN events, Zeitgeist and Baby Zeitgeist. Zeitgeist, a larger show featuring student artists from across Nashville and USN, will take place on Friday, April 26. Baby Zeitgeist, Zeitgeist's more chill little sibling, took place Friday, January 26 and offered a smaller cozy show held in The Loft [on the second floor of Sperling Cafeteria]. The shows are a ton of fun, and both the large-scale performances of Zeitgeist and the relaxed musical hangout space of Baby Zeitgeist serve as a mechanism to display students' passions in ways that are normally hard to show at school.

Q: What is it like to be a member of your club/org?
A: The responsibilities of Zeitgeist leaders mostly revolve around organizing and advertising the two big performances, something that ramps up right after the first semester. Responsibilities include getting audio gear, finding performers, scheduling, advertising shows, finding vendors, working with administration, and a couple odds and ends here and there. It's a really fun experience leading the organization, and it's especially cool to just work with performers and see the shows themselves. Zeitgeist leaders make a lot happen, but the brunt of what makes Zeitgeist great are the students who perform and watch it.

The lineup for Zeitgest includes: The Jets (Oliver McDowell '25, Sid Pruthi '25, Seth Prince '25, Brendan West '25), Channel (Bronson Schmidt '25, Xavier Warren '24, Yiannis Volanakis '25, Sam Venable '25), The Arpreggibros (Cameron Thompson '24, Jack Loss '24, Jack Wellons '24), Olivia Stany '27, Lila Hemphill '26, Jaya Gupta '25, Uma Ehrig '25, Buck (featuring Scarlett White '24), Coco Shepard '27, The Anywhos!, and more.

Food, snacks, crafts, and art will be available for sale from the Breakfast Club, Ethics Bowl, Baking Club, Medical Minded Students, GSA, Eliana Gorden, and Betsy Bowles.

    Middle School Quiz Bowl competes at national championship

    The Middle School Quiz Bowl finished off another successful season with a trip to the Middle School National Championship Tournament in Chicago. The team fought hard and ended the season as a top-100 program in the country, finishing 75th overall. Congratulations to the team on a great performance and to Lucas Lupu ’31, named an All Star for being the fifth-highest scorer nationwide.
