This past weekend, forty-four Middle School theatre students, accompanied by 15 chaperones packed their bags and flew to Neverland. Well, more specifically, they traveled to Atlanta to participate in the Junior Theatre Festival 2015.

And what an exciting event filled weekend it was. Saturday, students presented a 15 minute segment of Peter Pan, Jr. for adjudication, watched other schools perform, and attended workshops. In the evening, we enjoyed seeing the New Works Showcase pieces that are being newly released for licensing by schools for performance. The offerings included Elf, Jr., Singing in the Rain, Jr., James and the Giant Peach, Jr., and Lion King, Jr. They were very impressive! Oh, and for those of you who watch Glee— Darren Criss made a surprise appearance and sang 2 songs.

Sunday started off with “Pathways to Success,” which allowed us to hear from Lilla Crawford (Annie, Into the Woods…), Luca Padovan (Newsies, James and the Giant Peach…), and Robert Lopez & Kristen Anderson-Lopez (ummmm… so much stuff, but the most recent being the music for Frozen). All spoke about how things came about in their professional lives. Luca sang a song from James and the Giant Peach, and Robert and Kristen performed several selections from Frozen.

Next came the Freddy G teacher awards. Our own fabulous Mr. King presented the awards for this year’s Freddy G teacher experience winners. Of course, as expected, he was the best presenter of the entire weekend. We can be a little biased, and still speak the truth. :)  The Freddy G alums sang and danced to Shake It Off, so we also enjoyed some of Mr. King’s smooth dance moves. After lunch, we were back for "Direct From Broadway." This year, the discussion was led by none other than Thomas Schumacher, the Producer and President of Disney Theatrical Group. Sunday closed with a fabulous concert by Megan Hilty.

And now— the school awards!
