Students meet 'Strong Inside' author

by Susan Godwin, fifth grade English teacher

Field trips continue to Vanderbilt University exhibit.
Fifth-grade students met "Strong Inside" author Andrew Maraniss while at the exhibit "Race, Sports, and Vanderbilt: 1966-1970." The exhibit is at the Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery through Thursday, Dec. 8. It features a book about Perry Wallace's tumultuous experience as the first African-American student on a SEC basketball team. What a great introduction to our emotional civil rights journey, beginning after Winter Break.

Students were stoked to meet a bona fide author, especially now as they are deep into their novel-writing experience during November's National Novel Writing Month. The students asked Maraniss wonderful, thoughtful questions.
