AD's Corner: Girls' soccer advances to state final four

by Josh Scouten, boys' athletics director

The High School girls' soccer team shut out Donelson Christian Academy and University School of Jackson.
Four different players scored goals in the Region Consolation Finals to lift USN to a 5-0 victory over Donelson Christian Academy. Olivia Dossett started the game off with a shot outside the 18-yard box, up and over the DCA goalkeeper in the first 10 minutes of the game. Emma Wuerth gave the Tigers the second goal of the game from a corner kick. Wuerth won the ball in the middle of the box, and poked it in, scoring the last goal of the first half.

The Tigers maintained possession and kept up the attack. Mary Sophia Reich played a ball to Kailey Nichols, who scored the third goal of the match. The last two goals came from Courtney Rabb, dribbling past the DCA defenders and placing the ball in the net, making the final score 5-0.

The girls advanced to the State Quarterfinals and faced University School of Jackson on Friday, Oct. 22 with a spot in the state final four on the line. The game was dominated by the Bruins early in the first half, but the Tigers settled in and started to work the ball through the midfield. The only great opportunity in the first half for either team came with less than five minutes to play on a corner that USJ headed off the crossbar and out of play.

The second half was a more balanced affair with both sides finding opportunities but coming up short of finding the back of the net until a ball played back to the defense by USJ was intercepted by Courtney Rabb. Rabb took the ball from about 35 yards out and beat the goalkeeper to give USN a 1-0 lead with nine minutes remaining. The senior-led defense and sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Robinson kept the clean slate to the end to give USN a spot in the state final four.

The team will now travel to Murfreesboro on Friday, Oct. 28 to face defending state champion Evangelical Christian School at 4:30 p.m. The game will be played at Richard Siegel Soccer Complex and admission to the game is $10. The winner will advance to the championship game at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 and face the winner of Battle Ground Academy and St. George's Independent School.
