Three McMullan Scholars Chosen
The latest McMullan Scholars were recognized at the high school's awards assembly.
The McMullan Scholarship was endowed in 2003 by Mark Venrick '48 and his classmates in honor of their English teacher, Lois McMullan. This Scholarship is intended to recognize demonstrated scholarship and leadership at USN at the end of the recipients’ junior year.
Last year's McMullan Scholars, seniors Sydney Robbins and Kate Tanner, came to the stage to welcome the newest ones.
Vince Durnan says of the three Scholars selected for 2016-2017, "They’ve all shouldered the responsibilities of elected office. They lead on the stage and on the court, and in the court, and they seek out tough academic challenges, here and on campuses that typically house college students. They pay special attention to segments of our community that otherwise might not feel our support the way we would hope, and they have each persevered through challenges we might easily forget given their exemplary daily contributions to school programs."
"As have many of their predecessors, they stepped up big to make the prom successful, when juniors start to show leadership to honor the seniors. They also have stepped out, whether to be there for a nearby elementary student, to support medical access in our city, or to give quieter people a place to hang out in the midst of a school dance."
"We are calling these three out, both to say thanks and to serve notice that much is to be expected—but then they have proven generous in spirit, committed in deed, and agile of mind. The underlying notion is that the senior year is a time to do your very best here while coaxing out our very best as a school. To name these next McMullans is a great delight, especially so because if they are like all the others they will be people I’ll turn to knowing they have this boost for their confidence and commitment. Help me congratulate and bring forward the next McMullans—Puja Jagasia, George LaBour, and Elsa Wilson."
