Artclectic 2015: A Weekend of Art and Inspiration

by Ginger Sands

In just two short weeks, October 22-24, Artclectic, USN’s annual art show and sale, will once again take up residence. Get your Patrons Party tickets now.
This year's theme, “Inspire. Be Inspired,” celebrates the ways that art helps us to see the world from a new perspective.

The Sperling Gym will become a stunning art gallery filled with the works of over 55 artists from Nashville and around the country. The campus will be dressed with eye-popping displays and illuminated with special effects lighting. Three days of parties and events will take place, providing ample opportunities to take it all in, with the elegant Patrons Party Thursday evening, the festive ARTBash community party on Friday, and a family-friendly Saturday, including the POPclectic crafts market and family art activities.

At the center of all of this “big top” energy are the dual goals of raising funds for USN’s Endowment for Innovation in Education and opening wide our doors to the broader Nashville community for a special event celebrating art and artists. Artclectic also provides unique educational opportunities, giving our K-12 students at USN a chance to interact with makers of all stripes, to meet them in person, view their work, and ask questions about their process and inspiration.

One new artist, award-winning glass sculptor Gabriel Greenlaw, finds inspiration from an interesting source: neuroscience. Gabriel’s fascination with science is reflected in his series “The Complexity of Intrigue.” He explains, “My current work involves taking small inspirations, such as neurological elements, and expanding them millions, if not billions of times larger to where they become an immersive experience for the viewer."

Gabriel’s work is a perfect example of the cross-pollination that can occur when art meets science.  Hearing him explain how he creates his glass sculptures, students will be introduced to a multi-layered process that involves chemistry, physics, math, and engineering.

The Artclectic committee has been hard at work to make this weekend a special one. We hope that you will join in the festivities, bring your Nashville friends and neighbors, and return to enjoy the Saturday events with your family. We are confident that you leave engaged, entertained, and inspired.
