We took it on the chin last night vs BHS 0-7, in our first playoff game. Although we have demonstrated great improvement through the year, we still have a hill to climb in order to play with the best. Our BHS opponents are the defending 2018 State Champions.
Despite the loss, Carson Dorfman stood tall in nets denying a number of quality 1 on 1 opportunities against the Bruins. Sydney Russell played an amazing game both on defense and offense, contributing well as a two way player.
Now we make our way to the Hine Cup as we take to the ice tomorrow as follows at Plex B 8:30pm vs BA/FRA/LA. We look forward to the opportunity of playing another alphabet team. Go TEAM #15!!!
Coming off and two game win streak our team was hot and expectations were high. Unfortuately we came our flat and played that way pretty much the entire game, taking 3-0 loss to Blackman/Stewarts Creek.
We kicked off the evening with Senior Honors for Joe, Amy and Chris Orem. Joe, thank you for your leadership and contributions on the ice. Amy and Chris thank you for letting us borrow your child at school and at play! Best wishes at Sewanee Lacrosse.
As always Carson Dorfman stood tall in nets and managed to fend off some good shots, only to make one error on a breakaway. Defensively Sydney Russell did a great job playing both ways and skating with conviction, missing out on two good scoring opportunities. JD Chilton managed to do well despite coming off sickness recently.
Charlie Ford, Caleb Rice, Chirs Free, Joe Orem played hard but were unable to connect on any possessions. The skater of the evening was Drake Dixon, as he was always in the right place and at the right time, contributing on offense and defense.
We took to the ice vs Franklin/Hume Fogg and came away with a 4-0 win. This win was well earned with the help of Ironman goalie Carson Dorfman and a shutout no less. With fast end to end action and even shots on goal at 26, both teams worked hard to earn a win, and one goalie stood tall!
Chris Free opened the game with the first goal from the point. If you throw the puck at the net, something good always happens and in this case it was a deflection. On the second goal Joe Orem used the defenceman as a screen and sent hard roofie over the net minders shoulder. Chris came back with another goal and a hard shot in similar fashion. Finally Will Bailey slammed home a one timer in the slot from a great pass by Joe.
Three defenders rotated during the first period, trying to keep up with the pace of play. Sydney Russell, Chris Free and Reid Murray did a good job managing the defense and Charlie Ford joined them during the last two periods. Special teams had to setp up and and deny a shorthanded 5:3 penalty kill.
Frankly it was a great team effort as everyone contributed in some form or fashion. During a shorthanded penalty kill, Drake Dixon skated with passion holding the opponents at the blue line.
We took to the ice in our first Pool play match up vs BA/FRA/LA, another alphabet team. This evening our team came to play as we traded goals and swapped momentum each period. In the end it was outstanding goalie play from Carson Dorfman that made a difference, only to fall short 1-3.
We played a "complete" game this evening, only to flll short becuase of a lack of manpower. Every player and every shift was productive as we demonstrated grit and poise to the very end.
Our play by play highlights included -
DEFENSE - Sydney, JD, Townes, Reid and Chris kept our opponents in check with well managed positional play.
OFFENSE - Joe scored our only goal half way through the first period, and we managed 25 shots on goal, our season high.
Special Teams - on our first penalty kill we held off our opponents, only to fall short on the second penatly kill.
It was a wonderful drive home reflecting on our HISTORIC first win of the season, defeating cross town rival Ensworth/Nolensville 6-3.
Ironman Carson Dorfman stood tall in goal and denied our opponents many scoring opportunities, this has been a familiar refrain this season. Finally we were able to put together a complete game with strong offense, defense and special teams. Everyone did their part contributing to a team effort.
OFFENSE - Chris Free started things off and notched 2 goals; Jesse Small returned to action from injury and also notched 2 goals; Townes Haley blistered a slap shot from the point that found the back of the net; Joe Orem was able to cap of the game with an empty netter in the waning moments to seal the victory.
DEFENSE - buoyed by smart and physical play by Sydney Russell, JD Chilton, Townes Haley and Reid Murray, our defense kept the opponents at bay and protected Carson. They even participated in some rushes on offense.
At one moment in the game Nico Nguyen was battling hard against the boards to prevent our opponents an offensive possession. His play was an indication of how every player was committed to play with intensity!
Perhaps it was Coach Gately's pre game speech that triggered such great action, or perhaps it was just time to post a win. In any case it was a great drive home! Let's have a few more wins Team #15.
