Tigers Edge Out Eagles in Close Dual

Justin Karpinos
The USN Swimming Tigers swam to a close win over Brentwood Academy last Thursday. The boys won 85-71, while the girls battled to a win that came down to the final 50 yards of the meet, edging out the Eagles 84-81.

Swimming without three of our girls, we expected this would be a closely contested meet. And on the girls’ side, the meet was a showcase of depth. Our girls took first place only three of the eight individual events, thanks to Abby Liff (100 freestyle), Caroline Cramer (400 freestyle), and Lucy Mauries (who tied for first in the 50 freestyle). Notably, these were Caroline and Lucy’s first individual wins in high school dual meets. Both our 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays finished second behind BA’s “A” teams. But the final race of the meet was the 400 freestyle relay, and our girls earned the 1-2 finish they needed to win the meet. Lucy, Annie French, Tatiana Barbic, and Mia Pretorius won the race, but the real story was Caroline Cramer, Harper Johnston, Ashleigh Grindon, and Arianna Bendell, who took over second place in the final 50 yards of the race to give USN a 4 point swing and the overall win.

On the boys’ side, William Grobmyer earned his first individual dual meet win by capturing the 200 freestyle, which was the boys’ team’sswim of the meet. Other USN event winners were Ian Brash (100 freestyle) and Stefan Pretorius (100 backstroke). The USN boys also captured two of the three relays, including a 1-2 finish in the final 400 freestyle relay to wrap up the meet.

Our swimmers of the meet were Caroline Cramer and Lucy Mauries. Caroline swam a patient, controlled race in her 400 freestyle win and a fantastic lead off in the 400 freestyle relay to earn her other new Region cut and help set the team up for the 1-2 finish. Lucy had a great race in the 100 backstroke in addition to her 50 freestyle co-win, and she’s now within striking distance of state cuts in multiple events.

With this win, USN wraps up its divisional dual meet schedule. Our boys finished undefeated (5-0), earning the divisional title, while our girls and combined team finished 5-1, earning (presumably) the divisional runner-up.

The team is now back in training mode for the rest of the month and will resume competing on January 10, when we honor our seniors in our home meet against Cookeville High School.
