LS drive benefits Wedgewood elderly

by Melissa Sherman, second grade teacher

Lower Schoolers are seeking donations of home essentials and luxuries drive cheer residents at nearby Wedgewood Towers, where they serve each week.
A year ago, many Lower School classes began a service-learning partnership with the residents at Wedgewood Towers in our Edgehill neighborhood. Each week a Lower School class visits the residents. We have played games, made art and explored technology. Students and residents enjoy their time together, laughing and playing.

Last year many USN families participated in our holiday drive by sending in toiletries, hats, gloves and mittens. It was a success. Wedgewood Towers Social Worker Kita Davis said many of her residents would not have had a gift if it were not for our drive. Knowing that, we are hoping to be able to deliver even more holiday cheer this year.

The theme of this year’s drive is Home Essentials-Home Luxuries. In a month of the year that is often associated with avarice, we hope this will be a conversation starter between students and their families: What are the things our family needs to take care of ourselves and our home? What things do we enjoy or make our family life more fun?

Between now and Thursday, Dec. 13, we are accepting unwrapped donations from the lists below.  We will then have the help of Middle School Teacher Connie Fink’s fifth-grade service-learning club to sort and wrap. Donations can be brought to your Lower School classroom or Second Grade Teacher Melissa Sherman’s room, 2535.  Thank you for helping to brighten a senior citizen’s holiday season.
