Preloved books find new homes in classrooms, homes

by Angie Howard and Leslie Hudson, Fall Book Frenzy Co-Chairs

Fall Book Frenzy, USNA's annual used book and media sale, raised more than $14,000 for the Hassenfeld Library. Hundreds of books were donated to USN and Metro Schools teachers and nonprofits.
For more than 20 years, USN’s annual Fall Book Frenzy has attracted bibliophiles of all ages. This year’s event, held Sept. 27-29, proves that even in an age of e-readers and audiobooks, people still love real books. Generous donations from the USN community, along with the hard work of our dedicated volunteers, transformed the Cheek Gym into a giant used book and media store. Check out this video, created by Nicholas Hudson ’21 to watch the transformation from gym to bookstore. Special thanks to the Fall Book Frenzy committee and to the more than 85 volunteers who helped make Fall Book Frenzy 2108 a success.

Shoppers from both USN and the Nashville community found fabulous books, games, puzzles, music, and more. As always, proceeds from the event benefit USN’s Hassenfeld Library. We are pleased to report that Fall Book Frenzy 2018 raised roughly $14,000 for the library, which will be used for collection development and author visits.

Fall Book Frenzy also benefits our USN faculty and staff. Over 60 USN teachers selected free bags of books for use in their classrooms and the library added hundreds of books to its collection. USN faculty, staff, and volunteers also shared their recommendations in our new USN Reads display.

Fall Book Frenzy reaches the larger community as well. Several teachers from Horizons at USN academic enrichment program and Carter-Lawrence Elementary School selected free books for classroom use. Former USN teacher Marion Bradford now at Carter-Lawrence teacher was especially grateful.

“You have no idea how much these books will mean to my students,” said Bradford.

Librarians and media specialists from 10 Metro Nashville Public Schools also received books for use in their classrooms. Special thanks to USN Fourth Grade Teacher and Horizons at USN Program Director Kim Avington as well as USN parent Bo Daniel Parr for coordinating our educator outreach.

Fall Book Frenzy continues to attract shoppers from all over Middle Tennessee. Book dealers and collectors, homeschoolers, student teachers, and college students flocked to USN to shop our public sale on Saturday, Sept. 29. USNA volunteers Christie Laird and Joanna Hall did a fabulous job promoting the event without a budget. At 2 p.m., bargain hunters lined up for our famous $5 Fill-the-Bag Sale. Special thanks to USN parents Judy and Richard Feaster for working with the local book collecting community and for sharing their bookselling expertise.

Local charities and nonprofits also participated in our public sale. While Fall Book Frenzy is a fundraiser for the Hassenfeld Library, our primary goal is to get books out of the gym and into the community. Six community groups selected free books for use in their organizations. Special thanks to USN parents Katrina Dickerson and Tina Corkum for helping us reach out to new organizations this year. All remaining books and merchandise were donated to Goodwill Industries. A huge thanks to USN staff, especially USNA Office Manager Deb Alberts,  Campus Services Director Marte Beatty, Operations Director Erik Mash, and the entire operations staff for making Fall Book Frenzy 2018 possible.
