Tigers Place Third at Region Championships

Monday's region tournament offered no guarantees. The unpredictable weather cast doubts that we would be able to play and the top half for the field was filled with equally talented teams. For as much as we might complain about the newly added district tournament, it does condense the field into a more competitive group.

The rain held off long enough for the players to receive instructions and head out to their respective starting holes. First hole jitters? Check. Rain only added the additional insult. Eli’s comment was, “It was raining so hard I laid up on the first hole” – it was a short par 3. Another Tiger drop kicked their tee shot. Yes, the conditions made an entrance, but thankfully exited before the players 3rd hole.

The rest of the day was a battle; I think golf is able to use that descriptor. Each player on the top-three teams had to scramble to make their score. None of them found the easy path to victory. Today the top teams earned it, which may be why placing 3rd was so hard to swallow. Our boys played with tenacious determination, a seasoned grip that USN golf has not experienced before, at least not in my tenure.

In the end, our USN boys missed qualifying for the state tournament by two strokes, just seven strokes off the winning score. The top teams in our region are closely matched with talent, certainly nothing to hang our heads about.

Will Barrett lead the team with a 76, followed by Tate Kloeppel 78, Joe Orem 79, Eli Murphy 80 for a team total of 312. Thank you to our seniors! The most successful boys golf group we have ever had.

On the girl’s side. Anne Griffin was paired with the powerhouse group (multiple state title holders) and she played brilliantly. Nothing phases this kid, she was consistent all day. Anne started the season with one big question. Could she handle the additional yardage of HS golf? The answer is yes. With the exception of a few holes, she was right with the bombers of her group. One of which set a course record with a 63, another shot 79, and Anne carded a season low tournament score of 81 earning her 3rd individual in our region and a trip to the state tournament this Monday and Tuesday in Manchester, Tenn. Congratulations to Anne!

Give this group an extra accolade or two when you see them. And thank you for your continued support of our program. We know we miss a lot of your class time, and we do not take that for granted.
