USN Crowned District Champs!

Coach Boysen
USN Tiger Golf = District Champions! Margin of victory? One stroke.

Today is the first of the “four more” – district tournament, region tournament, and then two days of the state tournament.

They have worked hard for this series and proved today that they are ready.

We had a sunrise warm up at our new River Campus practice area, thank you Josh and Brett! The team looked great, and felt great. After a five-gallon bucket of balls we headed over to the course, and if you were not one of the lucky @USNSports Twitter followers today, you missed a real descriptive treat by our own Coach Fitzpatrick. Don’t fret, I’ve included them below:

“Historic Ted Rhodes golf course is our host site today, situated on the shores of the mighty Cumberland.”
8am. Shotgun start, all on various starting holes.

“Jonathan G. ‘19 chips to the 17th, his first, and he has 10 feet left for a bogey.
He aligns his putter with the ball with no less care than a mother hen would show her chicks. But it was not to be, and Jonathan opens at +2 [sic] +1.”
You would think that Coach Fitz is being overly cute and dramatic here, but nope, the above is 100% accurate.

“Joe O. ‘19 finishes breakfast scramble from the bunker w/ a 12 foot putt on 18 to save par.
Jonathan’s approach to the 18th misses me by mere inches, which I suppose will be disappointing to many of you.”

Our boys and girl were on today, but each will describe a few holes were they missed by - positions index finger about an inch from thumb. We left some scoring opportunities out there, however the team looked sharp.

“I have now my first opportunity to see senior co-captain Joe strike his tee shot to the 4th, a dogleg right par 4 of 375 yards. I would not like to have been that ball, I’ll tell you that. It was pounded mercilessly about 270 yards into the fairway.”

“While Joe disregards the welfare of the ball almost entirely, Jonathan sets his ball on the tee as if it were a porcelain egg. He is safe on the 4th, his sixth.”
Again, this is an accurate description.

“Anne not happy about it but taps in a bogey on no. 18 after just missing her par putt. Smiles as she walks by though.”
Anne has one of the best demeanors on the course and took one for the team today by eating a celebratory meal chosen by the boys. She gets the next pick.

“Anne G. ‘22 delicately places her ball on the tee just so and then mashes it straight down the fairway on par 4 no. 18. She will have 80 yards left on her approach.”
She is usually pipes it straight, every time, not the longest, but straight.

“Tate went past the par-5 16th in 2 and was well below the green, but his pitch soared majestically into the air and landed like a butterfly with sore feet. He’s left with 15 feet for a birdie.”

Varsity Boys:  District Champions with a team total of 307 which is an all-time USN Boys Golf record! Joe O. 73, Will B. 77, Eli M. 78, Tate K. 79, Jonathan G. 91.
Varsity Girl: 2ndPlace Individual and Regional Qualifier with an 88, Anne G.!
