The 2017-2018 USN Chess Team of Lower and Middle School students finished the season with a bang by being the most represented Middle Tennessee school in the 2018 National Elementary Chess Championship at the Opryland Hotel.
The 2017-2018 USN Chess Team finished the season with a bang by being the most represented Middle-Tennessee school in the 2018 National Elementary Chess Championship at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. Our students battled it for three long days from Friday, May 11 through Sunday, May 13 with some of their games lasting more than three hours each.

Our K-3 team came in 12th place overall. Those players were Krish '28, Ishaan '28, Eesha '28, Sofia '28, Daniel '27, Teague '27, Loch '28, Kevin '28, Asha '28, and Will '28.

Our K-6 team finished 16th overall and their team consisted of Evan Hauser '25, Laura Grace Hirt '24, Maximus Gulmi '24, and Maya Guha '24.

We also had some individuals competing in some of the various sections. Stewart Hall '25 turned in a positive result in his category with some dazzling games, as did Joshua Muellenbach '25 and two new players competed in their first event in the Unrated Section: Dalton Dervan '28 and Jonah Bendell '27 finished seventh overall as a team.

Finally, in the K-1 group, two-player team of Matthew '29 and Reese '30 did not have enough players to place (four to a team), but they picked up some valuable experience for next season.

A big congratulations to Joshua Muellenbach '25 who won our school championship the previous week. Our USN school championship is a six-week competition where it takes some serious stamina and concentration to prevail.

Of course, we would not be able to even compete over Mother's Day weekend without all the great USN moms sacrificing their holiday to be there with us. A super big thanks to them and the USN staff for making this a great chess year.
