A Successful Year for High School Latin Students

High School Latin students who joined our school’s chapter of the Tennessee Junior Classical League were eligible to participate in the Mid-State and State T.J.C.L. conventions held in February and April.
Mid-State Convention
 
Nineteen students made the arduous trek down Broadway to compete in the Mid-State academic, art, costume, poetry and essay events at Hume-Fogg in early February. Students who placed first through fifth in the various competitions were awarded ribbons. The winners of ribbons were:
 
Zachary Bressman: Derivatives (5th); Heptathlon (4th); Literature (2nd); Mythology (2nd); Best of Show, Grammar Level 5

Elliott Clark: Heptathlon (1st); Mythology (1st); Roman History (1st); Best of Show, Derivatives

Courtney Edington: Sculpture (2nd)

Seth Ellis: Heptathlon (5th)

Annie French: Derivatives (3rd); Heptathlon (2nd)

Shriya Karam: Heptathlon (3rd)

Mason Lee: Roman History (5th); Literature (2nd); Models (2nd)

D.J. Lewis: Roman History (2nd)

Sophie Perfetto: Mythology (2nd)

Courtney Rabb: Heptathlon (3rd)

Isla Tarleton: Derivatives (3rd); Mythology (3rd); Literature (2nd)

Joel Tyson: Literature (5th)


State Convention
 
Fourteen students traveled to Austin Peay State University in early April to compete in the State TJCL convention. M. Espenant accompanied us as a chaperone for the second year in a row, took beautiful photographs of the students in action, and charmed us yet again with his Gallic bonhomie. State offered an even wider array of events. The students won fifth place in the skit competition, the spirit contest, and Advanced Certamen. Our Intermediate Certamen team took fourth place. Overall we took the second place trophy in Division AAA. And by no means least of all, our chariot construction improved greatly! The ribbon winners were:

National Latin Exam
 
Most high school Latin students took the National Latin Exam on the Ides of March. Not only did they survive the day, they did very well! Here are the results:
